Pittsfield's Community Development Board approved Beacon Cinema expansion to a 32-seat downtown location. The unanimous vote allows Insight Holdings, LLC to convert the former Marketplace Cafe space at 47-57 North Street in the Downtown Creative District into a theatre despite board reservations about losing active retail use on a primary downtown street. Cinema officials predicted the new location would draw up to 200,000 visitors annually, up from 165,000 at its current site.
The board also unanimously approved changes to align battery energy storage systems zoning regulations with new state requirements and voted to become petitioner for a Downtown Core District amendment expanding form-based code to the Westside.
